What: "The Toilet” a riveting play is exemplary of several recurring themes in Baraka's critically acclaimed work, which often depicts the drama of the sensitive, isolated individual pitted against the social code of his community; a marginalized individuals' self-hatred as perpetuated by society; and the failure of love, or of the ability to love in our society.

AIN'T SUPPOSED TO DIE A NATURAL DEATH
Who: Melvin Van Peebles in partnership with The Classical Theatre of Harlem will kick-off its season in partnership with the City Parks Foundation to present FREE performances of its award-winning production of Melvin Van Peebles's musical Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death. Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death was a huge hit when it premiered on Broadway and was nominated for seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

What: Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death, a totally unique fiction form, is a gutsy, lusty politically-outspoken narrative of African American street life that explores inner-city agony. Peopled by junkies, crooked cops, prisoners, lovers and dreamers, Van Peebles' play is considered a tradition-shattering and trend-setting work which spawned the choreo-poem, spoken word and rap music.

CLIFFORD ODETS’ THE COUNTRY GIRL

What: The Country Girl is a classic backstage story. The title character, Georgie (Frances McDormand), is married to actor Frank Elgin (Morgan Freeman), once a great theater star, now down on his luck. When Frank is offered a major role by hotshot director Bernie Dodd (Peter Gallagher), he has the chance to make a major comeback. One of Clifford Odets's last plays, The Country Girl premiered to great acclaim and box office success on Broadway in 1950. A movie version of The Country Girl was released in 1954 and received two Academy Awards.
Who: Morgan Freeman last appeared on Broadway in The Gospel at Colonus in 1988, and Frances McDormand last appeared on Broadway the same season in A Streetcar Named Desire. Peter Gallagher was last seen on Broadway in Noises Off in 2001.

LAURENCE FISHBURNE STARS IN THURGOOD ON BROADWAY!
Who: Laurence Fishburne, Tony Award winner, a Drama Desk Award winner, an Outer Critics Circle Award winner, an Emmy Award winner, an Academy Award nominee and the recipient of a Theatre World Award. Perhaps best known to movie audiences for his performances in the blockbuster "The Matrix" series, Fishburne has also starred in such films as "Mission Impossible 3," "Bobby," "What's Love Got to Do With It," and "Boyz in the Hood," among many others.

What: Fishburne portrays Thurgood Marshall, who rosefrom the back streets of Baltimore to the Supreme Court of the United States, overcoming whatever obstacles society placed in his way. THURGOOD is his remarkable story, a triumph of courage -- not just for the man, but for the nation he bravely challenged and proudly served.

What: ¡Retumba! is a multi-ethnic all-female music and dance ensemble founded in March 1981 in celebration of Women's History month. Fusing traditional rhythms and ancient melodies with modern interpretations, ¡Retumba! bases its work on the historic meeting of African and European sounds in the Americas and the Caribbean, with a particular focus on the music of Puerto Rico, Cuba, The Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Brazil
